In an adaptive user interface, deterministic ground refers to the entities in the user interface that are not adapted by the system, and therefore can be relied upon to have consistent behaviour. For example, an adaptive website might have a recommended path suggesting the next page to look at (adaptive), but also have a fixed navigation menu (deterministic ground).
